Shopping By Boat

Here is the latest missive from Sue over in Pinklao.

This morning I arose to watch the old lady in the house below, fishing from the second floor of her home. I suppose it beats going down to the supermarket, which is what we had to do.
We decided to take a trip down to Big C for fresh fruit and veg. After putting on our shorts and sandals, we waded through the water, and clambered onto the little plastic boat at the gate of the condo.
This took us to the steps of Pinklao bridge and dry land. On the way the whole area was covered in water to a depth of around 5ft!!! There was an incredible stillness for a place so usually full of life, and unfortunately the water is already starting to smell quite bad.
We climbed the steps and from there we saw a gravel truck coming out of the flood and we cadged a lift on it. We were pulled up 6ft by our arms onto the back of the vehicle, the only toe hold being half way up. Fortunately, they had a ladder so we could disembark in a more dignified manner!!!
It took us across the bridge to the bus stops, and from there we caught the bus and successfully got our provisions.
Only our intrepid roving correspondent would wear pink to wade through the flood waters.  What style!

Due to the changes in the the bus routes we ended up taking two buses home, as the first one no longerwent in our direction. We then walked back over the bridge with all our bags. I've discovered muscles I didn't know I had!!!! Then the boat came to pick us up, this time it was a large sheet of polystyrene, but it did the job!!!
Apparently, the water is going to hang around for about 4 weeks in this area, so shopping trips in the near future should be quite exciting events.
Kim Notes:  Would the person who has put about the rumour that Sue has a bad case of haemorrhoids, and therefore needs to sit on a rubber ring, please put their hand up.  JUST JOKING!

  1. Sue,

You and your husband are real troopers for staying through the flood and making the best of
it. My hat is off to you two! Did you ever dream you would be doing this when you moved from the U.K.? Janice
