Dutch Oven Cooking

Allison, our daughter, and her husband Rob have long (a couple of years) experimented with Dutch Oven Cooking and they have invited us over for some great desserts in the past. Daniel, pictured below, also has a dutch oven and raises rabbits and chickens, all of which can prove very handy when it comes to planning a dinner. Roger and I just bought our first dutch oven so last night, Saturday, we combined our efforts for a total dutch oven dinner at our home. Roger and I cooked the potatoes, Allison and Rob the dessert, and Daniel and Grace the main dish, Rabbit stew (that's chicken stew when the grand kids are around).

While the grand kids enjoyed themselves on trampoline, the adults visited and enjoyed a lovely fall evening. Yes, Kim, the good weather has returned, hopefully for another month or so.

The cooking instructions are very similar to an oven, just using briquets to distribute the heat top and bottom around the pots. When all was complete we sat down to one of the best meals I've had in a long time.

  1. Wow, I'm impressed and the meal looked delicious. Funny that Mark and I were just about to order a Dutch oven from an online store he recommended. Are they cast iron? Chris

  2. Lots to comment on in this post.

Okay, just so you know - that's chicken stew when Kim is around also!

I have never seen a dutch oven on the go, in fact I never knew that they were used like that, so I have acquired some new knowledge today. The food looks delicious. Does it take long for the food to cook? Really what I want to know is, why does it make the food taste so good?

West Indians use 'Dutchies' as they are called, but I have never seen one used in Jamaica either.

Okay, I guess you know that Dutchie is also a reference to marijuana. An American friend also used the term 'dutch oven' to refer to when someone passes gas in bed (FARTS for the Brits amongst us).

Okay, I have to ask so don't get insulted, is your lawn real? It looks so green. Also, I hadn't really spotted this before, is your trampoline above a hole in the ground?

Do you know what using those dutch ovens reminds me of? I'll post a picture.

Tell the kids I'll be expecting a dutch oven treat when I visit next year - and I don't mean rabbit and I don't mean gas!

  3. Yumm....Janice, did you see there was an entire article, complete with receipes, in Sunset Magazine on Dutch Oven cooking not long ago? I will send it to you if I still have it.

Also when I was in Santa Fe in last March, there was a big dutch oven competition in a nearby town that I wanted to go to...seems to be quite popular

    Beautiful lawn (garden, right Kim?)
