Devine Dessert

Dinner at a friend's house last night was rounded off by individual cakes, served on teeny tiny dessert platters.  I had definite platter envy!
The cakes were served on one large platter and each little platter was a different pastel colour, so we were able to choose our favourite colour.   Much as I loved the cake (scrummy), I was eyeing those little stands and wondering whether our hosts would notice one less at the end of the evening!

Can't Wait To Try This!

It could be that I am the only person in the world who doesn't know this trick to separate eggs.  Take a look.
Now I know what to do with all those old plastic bottles!

Bangkok Farmers Market

Bangkok Farmers Market has been going for a while now.  It is based at K Village, behind Big C on Rama IV.

What's new in Bangkok

Taken from the platform at Siam BTS
As usual there is a ton of building work going on in Bangkok and here are a few projects that are new to you.  This building site is opposite Paragon, where the cinema was burned down during the troubles.  I don't know yet what this is going to be, but I would put money on a shopping mall given the location.  It is obviously going to be higher than the building that used to be there.

Chef Ben Does It Again

Everyone has a bit of a moan about guests, no matter how eagerly anticipated their arrival.  'What shall we give them to eat', we all groan?  Well, when Ben Chalmers rolls into town, your worries are over because Ben takes over your kitchen.  Yes Chef Ben to the rescue!

Water Water Everywhere But Not A Drop To Drink!

Wednesday evening I was told that the supplier of our drinking water (Sprinkle), could no longer provide us with water as their factory had been flooded.

That was followed by the news that some of the drinking water in BKK had become slightly contaminated by flood water.

On top of that, we were then told that we were going to be hit by the flood water today or this weekend.  I have to say at this point, it feels bizarre talking about the place flooding.  It is bright sunshine and hasn't rained in a couple of days.  I am positive that the rainfall in BKK itself is lighter than normal.

Anyway, as it was evening, I decided to wait until the next day to buy a few bottles of back up water.

Dutch Ovens Continued

Remember on our religious walk that covered a church, temple and mosque, we visited a Portuguese cake bakery.  Isn't the method they used to cook those cakes the same as your Dutch oven?  I am really curious about this method of cooking now that I have seen how the Dutch oven works.

Dutch Oven Cooking

Allison, our daughter, and her husband Rob have long (a couple of years) experimented with Dutch Oven Cooking and they have invited us over for some great desserts in the past. Daniel, pictured below, also has a dutch oven and raises rabbits and chickens, all of which can prove very handy when it comes to planning a dinner. Roger and I just bought our first dutch oven so last night, Saturday, we combined our efforts for a total dutch oven dinner at our home. Roger and I cooked the potatoes, Allison and Rob the dessert, and Daniel and Grace the main dish, Rabbit stew (that's chicken stew when the grand kids are around).

Er - No Thanks Darling, I'm On A Sudden Diet!

So, after Alan's masterful event in the kitchen last night (if you haven't read that, read it first), great things were expected for my Sunday roast.
I was ordered out of the kitchen and told not to come back. Fine by me. En-route to the table when he called me for lunch, I walked passed the kitchen and saw a rather anaemic looking thing on the counter - our roast chicken. I had already had one foray into the kitchen earlier, when I noticed that he had already put the potatoes on to cook way before time AND in oil that was obviously not hot enough. I asked why he had put them in so early. The book said allow 40 minutes. I pointed out that that would be for regular sized roast spuds, not the tiny ones he had made.

Well Alan was absurdly proud of the meal he had cooked (look at his face) and that was the main thing. No actually the main thing was that he was doing everything, including the clearing away. What a lovely boy!
He had also set the table, no sitting on the sofa in front of the television when a feast was about to be produced. Please note we have the hard place mats set on top of the soft breakfast ones, he said they looked more cheerful that way, isn't that nice? The kitchen salt and pepper were conveniently set out between us (thank goodness he didn't take the silver ones out, way too much work getting that salt out after) and of course, the wine.

By the time the meal reached the table, I was met with three slabs of the most unappetising chicken you can imagine. The tiny bit of skin on one piece was pale. However, it was nothing to the horror show of Alan's meat, which also had the leg. It was white. I gently asked if it was cooked. Yes it was cooked he replied, but maybe it could do with a bit more time just to brown it! Also on my plate was what amounted to half a potato - apparently there wasn't enough room to cook more than one potato, and as I predicted, they were oil laden from absorbing the cool oil. Yum.
I ate as quickly as I could, leaving some of the chicken, which was also not hot by the time the plate hit the table. Could he have been dishing up in front of the open window perhaps? Look at the far right of the picture, it looks like an open window to me! I also wanted to eat mine before having to watch Alan eat his chicken, which he then agreed was not cooked. He carried on eating it, despite my dire warnings of how bad for you underdone chicken is. When I went into the kitchen after dinner, there was blood on the carving tray!!! I put the chicken back into the oven and told him to let it cook properly. I am going to make it into a pie. Usually I have to fight Alan to stop him taking the cold chicken for his sandwiches. He refused to take some, admitting that it was also tasteless as he hadn't seasoned it properly. I know you all think I exaggerate, despite me telling you at least a million times that I don't, but look at this close up. What do you think?
The funny thing was, he started to turn it around into being my fault. I should have told him that the oven thermometer doesn't work properly - err maybe he just didn't listen to me moaning about it. Then I should have advised him - err, who was thrown out the kitchen with the famous words oft uttered by Alan, I know how to do it? Never one to not kick a man when he is down, I spent the afternoon telling him what an awful meal it was, and then had three visits to the loo to prove it! Funnily enough, Alan normally does a really good roast dinner. I just want to know why my meal was so awful, when he cooked himself a superb steak the night before? Do you think he is trying to kill me off?!

A pig flew at the Raybould's!

Well never let it be said that pigs don't fly!

Alan hit the kitchen yesterday to cook himself a steak dinner! THis was of course after he asked me how to saute the potatoes!

Here he is chopping away at his onion.

Has anyone else noticed a curious thing about the way men cook? They have to use the biggest implements avaialable.

This Japanese chopper was a wedding present that I have never used as I am unable to finely peel & chop with it. Also, why use two knives? I want a knife I can peel and chop with. But I digress. Just look at the size of that chopper and he is using it on half an onion. Bless him!
The other curious thing I have noticed about Alan and cooking, there is never a bottle too far away, and I don't mean a sauce bottle. Now the wine isn't to add to the steak to make some fancy French dish. No, this is just for swigging. Maybe he needs Dutch courage before tasting his own cooking!

Well, even I had to admit it smelled great. Look how proud he is!

I think there must be something in the water because he actually volunteered to cook a roast chicken lunch. This will probably involve more wine and very loud music.

Really, we have to love our husbands, after all, who else would have them!!!

Ben at Cooking School

Okay, I may not be a proud mum, but I am a proud friend.  Look at Ben in his cooking class.  He is such a confident cook as well.
Didn't he do well?  I'm thinking of hiring him to cater for my parties!
