Erawan Museum & SamutPrakarn Crocodile Farm & Zoo

I have never visited the Erawan Museum before, but heard about the wonder and unique building.  I have to admit that this is pretty jaw dropping, a museum inside a three headed elephant!  It was worth the money just to see this much.

While it wasn't my idea of a museum, the interior is interesting architecturally.  Even had I not have known the fact beforehand, I would have guessed that it was connected to The Sanctuary of Truth out in Pattaya.  It had the same feel about it.

The wonderful stained glass roof with a map of the world and astrological signs.
The inside was ornately decorated with mosaic
Chinese rice bowls were used as dragon eyes or for other details and even whole spoons were used to artistic effect.
The is the room at the very top of the building.
The ceiling is decorated with what I think are paintings of constellations.
The gardens were full of interesting statues.
The crocodile farm had mixed reviews of Trip Advisor, but I decided to see for myself. Sure enough there were plenty of crocs around, though most appeared to be sleeping.  I think this one was waiting for a hapless tourist to fall over the rail!
There was however, a real shabby feel about the place.  This is the canopy above the elephant show area.  Mind you, as there were only about 10 of us, I guess it wasn't worth the investment.
The elephant show was little short of pathetic really.  Maybe it would amuse very small children, but the whole show, indeed most of the place, just felt sad.
There were other animals and birds on show, but seeing a beautiful tiger in a small cage was just sad to me.  There was a bigger pen for them, but for some reason, three were kept in a small cage.

At least the crocodile wrestling show was more entertaining.  Two men worked hard to earn the small notes we through down at them.  They had a little comic routine going and in-beteen they did some stunts, like sticking their heads in the crocs mouth,
or picking up the crocs for a cuddle.
Isn't it funny how from this viewpoint, the crocs look more like cartoon characters?

  1. Looks interesting! We never made it to the Erawan Museum, though we tried a couple of times - wish we had made it after seeing your photos. We made it to a few snake farms, but never the crocs. There's always something to see in Bangkok. Janice
