Houston: Some More

Kim wanted a few more photos of the amazing quilts I saw, so here goes.  The above was so well done but also made me laugh.  The title reads "Does it make my butt look big?"  I know the feeling!  Below is a close up of the winning quilt where you can see all of the applique work done to give her the look she wanted.  Again, absolutely amazing workmanship!

Below is a quilt made via computer/digital workmanship.  A few more rungs up the quilting ladder than I will ever get, but fascinating none the less.  It's like "How did they do that?!!".

Now this one, below, I know how they did it, but "Are you kidding me!"  Absolutely fabulous.  One thing I noticed throughout the show were the number of quilts I have previously seen in magazines and other shows.  I assume a number of these have more than one win under their belts.

This one won in the Art Quilt category.  I will admit that there were a few where I scratched my head and said, "Beautiful, but First Prize?"  It's probably good that I don't judge.

I think you can see that I am jumping here and there.  Sorry about that.  Below is a great quilt using dyed fabric, stamping and quilting to make the final quilt.  I don't think there was any piecing in it at all.  I liked the subtle colors as well.

Another of Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry's quilts.  Kim, you're right, she is using all of her names now.  She has consistently done, over the years, the best quilting and produced the most amazing quilts I have seen.

Another winner I had seen previously in a magazine.  Wonderful in person.

This is the crowd lining up to get into the Friday "Sampler".  I'm in the middle of the line and wondered about the available sitting.  It worked out just fine and I saw everything I wanted to.

This is one of Mary Sorensen's quilts.  She is, of course, one of the best applique artists  around.  I learned some great tips from her.  She also presented a great lecture entitled "What Makes a Great Quilt".  Obviously the only thing that truly matters is workmanship.  After that, anything goes.

  Another one by CBFG:

A favorite - color, applique, quilting.  It has it all.

There were a number of quilts from Japan in the show to be juried along with a grouping of winners in the last Japanese International show. They couldn't be photographed.  The one below first prize in Houston in the Pictorial category.  The quilt itself is much larger.  I just photographed a small portion.

And ending on a favorite of Kim's.  Kim, anytime you want me to locate you some Sun Bonnet Sue patterns, I'd be happy to.

There are so many great quilt shows now around the country and I'd love to visit them all.   Next year, hopefully, Paducah.

  1. Thank you for these!

I don't like the bird on the zebra quilt, it is too twee, rather like that bleeping Sunbonnet Sue quilt!

Is the chicken by David Taylor, it reminds me of his quilts?

    CBFG's quilts are divine.

I know what you mean about scratching you head and thinking why? I have done that a few times myself. I just admit that they may know more than I do about the quilts. Funny though, that there are some quilts we all look at and say, well why didn't that win, especially when compared to some winning quilts.

    More quilts please!
