Bald Eagle Sighting:

We had another day of snow (what else is new here) on Saturday, but Sunday brought beautiful blue skies and warmer temperatures so we decided to take a ride out to the Farmington Bay Bird Refuge, due west of our house on the edge of the Great Salt Lake.  With cameras and binoculars in hand we were searching for Bald eagles who have been spotted roosting in the area.  Bald eagles are now off the endangered species register and there have been sightings of over a 1,000 birds in Utah during the winter months of November through March.

Farmington Bay is marsh land, referred to as "wet lands", situated on the outer limits of the Great Salt Lake.  It sits between our home and Antelope Island.  It took about 15 minutes to get there by car and we drove a snow packed loop around the area.

We found eight eagles perched in three dead trees with branches strong enough to support them.  In the top photo the eagle in the top branch is munching on a fish from the fresh water ponds and marshes around the edge of the lake.

While this area is open to hunting of ducks and geese during the fall hunting season, there are areas that are restricted the entire year.  If you are a bird watcher, this is definitely one place to come.

The No Hunting signs do not stop fox, coyotes and probably skunks from trying their luck and we saw a lot of fresh tracks in the snow.

Canada Geese, as well as a few variety of ducks like mallards and teal winter in the mashland along the lake as well.

To me there is nothing as beautiful as fresh snow covered mountains against a blue sky.

But then again,  a few spring flowers, green grass, and budding trees would be nice as well.

  1. I agree those snow covered mountains and that blue sky are pretty impressive, especially from the warmth of BKK!

I'd loved to have seem the eagles. Is this the road we drove to the island, where we saw lots of small birds wading along the water's edge?

    1. This road isn't the same one we took to the island. This area is due west from our home, close to the grocery store were we purchased the cheeses (if you remember?). We used to ride our bikes out there a lot until housing developments started to take over. Such is progress. Janice
